Limit how much credit can be spent
Updated September 14, 2026
Two settings under Store Credit › Settings › Credit Redemption, in the Redemption Limits section, control how much credit can go onto a single order. They apply to the account balance and to vouchers alike.
Minimum redemption amount
The smallest amount of credit that can be applied at once. Set it to 0 for no minimum, which is the default and usually the right answer – a minimum mostly frustrates customers with small balances they cannot clear.
Maximum order coverage
The largest share of an order total that credit may cover, as a percentage. At 100 a customer can pay for an entire order with credit. Lower it – to 50, say – and credit covers at most half, so every order still takes some money through your payment gateway.
The figure accepts decimals, so a cap like 12.5% is allowed.
What this means in practice
Whichever limit bites first is the one the customer sees. The tool works out the maximum redeemable amount for the current cart and will not let them exceed it, whether they are applying a balance or picking vouchers.
A coverage cap below 100% has a knock-on effect worth thinking about: a customer whose whole balance exceeds the cap cannot clear it on one order, which is fine for a loyalty programme but frustrating if the credit came from a refund. Many stores leave coverage at 100% and use a minimum order total on cashback instead.
Per-situation limits
These two settings apply store-wide. If you need a different rule for particular products, categories, customer roles or payment methods, use conditional rules, which can block spending entirely or cap it by percentage or fixed amount for matching carts.
