Refund an order to store credit
Updated September 14, 2026
Refunding to store credit keeps the money in your store and gets the customer their value back instantly, with no payment gateway involved. Enable it with Show a “Refund as Store Credit” button on the order edit screen under Store Credit › Settings › Refund to Credit.
Issue the refund
- Open the order under WooCommerce › Orders.
- Click Refund beneath the line items.
- Enter the quantities or amounts you are refunding, exactly as you would for any other refund.
- Click the store credit refund button rather than the gateway refund button.
WooCommerce records a normal refund against the order, and the plugin grants the same amount as store credit. The customer’s credit history gains an entry and, if the matching email is enabled, they are notified.
Settings worth adjusting
- Button label – the wording on the button.
{amount}is replaced with the refund figure and{label}with your store credit label. - Deliver refunded credit as – account balance or a credit voucher. With only one credit system enabled the choice is hidden and that system is always used.
- Credit log note – what is written to the customer’s credit history.
{order}is replaced with the order number.
Refunding an order that bought credit
Refunding a top-up or gift card order is treated as a reversal rather than a refund: the credit the order granted is taken back rather than granted again. Where the customer has already spent it, the balance is reduced as far as it goes and the remainder is recorded as an outstanding debt, recovered from the next credit they receive. An order note records any shortfall.
Credit that was spent on the order
Credit a customer applied to an order is handled separately from the refund. Cancelling or fully refunding the order returns the applied balance and restores any voucher that was drawn down, so you do not need to hand it back yourself.
