Using the plugin with Stripe Tax

Updated September 14, 2026

Tax Exemption for WooCommerce works with the official Stripe Tax for WooCommerce plugin automatically. When Stripe Tax is calculating your tax, an exempt customer has tax removed from their order the same as they would otherwise. A Stripe Tax tab appears in Tax Exemption › Settings whenever that plugin is active, explaining how the two fit together.

The one limitation: guests cannot claim exemption

With Stripe Tax in use, tax exemption is only available to logged in customers. Guests checking out see a message telling them they need to log in or create an account to claim it.

If a meaningful share of your exempt customers check out as guests, this is worth planning around — either encourage account creation on the exemption page, or reconsider whether Stripe Tax is the right calculation method for your store.

Setting it up

There is nothing to configure beyond your normal plugin settings. Some related options are required for the integration to behave correctly, and the settings screen enables and explains them rather than letting you set an unworkable combination — a greyed-out option on the settings page will tell you which requirement is holding it.

Testing it

Place a test order as a logged in customer with exemption claimed and confirm the Stripe Tax line drops to zero before payment. Then repeat as a guest to see the log-in message, so you know exactly what your customers will encounter.
