The exemption form is not showing at checkout
Updated September 14, 2026
If the tax exemption checkbox or fields are missing from your checkout, cart or My Account page, work through the checks below. Several plugin settings deliberately hide the form, so start by ruling those out.
The feature is switched off
Check Enable Tax Exemption on the General tab at Tax Exemption › Settings. When it is off, the settings page shows a red “Tax Exemption is currently DISABLED” notice.
You have hidden it on purpose
On the Visibility tab, Hide Fields On Checkout leaves only the checkbox, and Hide Checkbox On Checkout removes that too. If both are on, nothing at all appears at checkout by design — customers manage exemption from their My Account page instead.
The customer is not eligible
The form is hidden from customers who cannot use it. Check the Restrictions tab for:
- Logged in users only — guests see nothing.
- Selected user roles only — customers outside those roles also lose the My Account tab.
- Selected countries only or Selected states only — the form hides when the address does not qualify.
- Specific products only with the “eligible product must be in cart” option — nothing shows until a qualifying product is added.
A customer whose status is Declined also has the form hidden from them.
The location setting points somewhere else
On the Display Locations tab, Location on Checkout may be placing the form somewhere your theme renders differently — try another of the four positions. The cart has six positions with the same caveat. Remember the cart checkbox and cart fields are separate settings, both off by default.
The My Account tab is missing
First check Settings on My Account Page is enabled. If it is, and the endpoint page loads directly but the menu item is absent, go to Settings › Permalinks and click Save — that flushes the rewrite rules. This was a known issue on block-based and page-builder account pages and was fixed in version 3.0.0, so make sure you are up to date.
Another plugin is interfering
Custom checkout plugins and page builders can replace the hooks the form attaches to. Test with a default theme and other plugins deactivated to confirm, then reintroduce them one at a time. If you land on a specific conflict, the shortcode is a reliable fallback — put [tefw_exemption_form] on a page of your own.
