How restrictions work for guest customers

Updated September 15, 2026

Guests do not have an account, so some restrictions work differently for them. Some check the email address the guest enters at checkout, and some always reject guests because they depend on account data.

Checked by email address once it is entered

Until the guest enters an email, these rules let the coupon through. They are checked again once the email is known:

  • New Customer Only
  • Allowed Email Domains and Disallowed Email Domains
  • Usage Limit Per Period
  • Must Have Purchased and Must Not Have Purchased

Checked once the address or method is chosen

  • Allowed Countries, Allowed State or Province, Allowed Zip / Postcode, Maximum Usage Per Address
  • Payment and shipping method rules

Always reject guests

These rules need a logged in account, so guests can never use a coupon with them set:

  • Allowed Customer User Roles
  • Minimum Total Customer Spent and Minimum Total Customer Orders, even if the guest has ordered before with the same email
  • Maximum Hours Since Last Order and Minimum Hours Since Last Order
  • Maximum Hours Since Customer Registered and Minimum Hours Since Customer Registered
  • Custom User Meta
  • Customer Logged In Status set to Logged In

Not affected by being a guest

Disallowed Customer User Roles never blocks a guest. Cart, product, date, IP, referring domain, cookie and coupon link rules work the same for everyone.

Tip

For coupons that depend on account history, set Customer Logged In Status to Logged In as well and add a custom message such as “Please log in to use this code.” Guests then get a clear reason instead of a message about order history.
