Limit a coupon to new customers, logged in or guest shoppers

Updated September 15, 2026

The Customer Status section limits a coupon to first-time buyers, or to shoppers who are logged in or logged out. It is in the Better Coupon Restrictions tab on the coupon edit screen.

New Customer Only

Tick New Customer Only to make the coupon valid only for customers who have not bought from you before.

  • Logged in customers are checked by their account.
  • Guests are checked by the email address entered at checkout. Until an email is entered the coupon is allowed, and it is checked again once the email is known.
  • Only orders with a paid status (Processing or Completed by default) and refunded orders count as a previous purchase.
  • Pending, failed and cancelled orders are ignored, so a customer whose first payment failed can still use the code when they try again.

The message shown is “This coupon is only available to new customers.”

Customer Logged In Status

  • Any: no restriction.
  • Logged In: only shoppers logged in to an account. Message: “This coupon is only available to logged in customers.”
  • Logged Out: only shoppers not logged in. Message: “This coupon is only available to guests.”

Setting these for every coupon (PRO)

With PRO, New Customers Only and Customer Logged In Status can also be set for all coupons at WooCommerce › Settings › Better Coupon Restrictions. When a global value is set, the matching field on each coupon is locked and shows a tooltip saying it is set globally. Tick Ignore Global Restrictions on a coupon to use that coupon’s own values instead. See Apply restrictions to all coupons with global settings (PRO).
