Limit a coupon to user roles

Updated September 15, 2026

The Customer User Role section allows a coupon only for certain WordPress user roles, or blocks certain roles from using it. It is useful for wholesale, staff or member-only codes.

Find it in the Better Coupon Restrictions tab on the coupon edit screen.

Allowed Customer User Roles

Choose one or more roles. The coupon only works for logged in users who have at least one of these roles. Guests have no role, so they cannot use a coupon with allowed roles set.

Message: “You do not have the required user role to use this coupon.”

Disallowed Customer User Roles

Choose one or more roles that cannot use the coupon. Users with any of these roles are rejected. Guests are not affected.

Message: “Your user role is not allowed to use this coupon.”

Which roles are listed

The lists show every role registered on the site, including roles added by other plugins such as a wholesale or membership plugin. If a role is missing, check that the plugin that creates it is active.

Example: wholesale-only code

  1. Edit the coupon and open the Better Coupon Restrictions tab.
  2. Choose your wholesale role in Allowed Customer User Roles.
  3. Optionally set Custom Error Message to “This code is for trade accounts. Please log in.”
  4. Save the coupon.
