Customise the coupon error messages

Updated September 15, 2026

Every section of the Better Coupon Restrictions tab has a Custom Error Message field. Text you enter there replaces the default message whenever any rule in that section rejects the coupon. Leave it blank to keep the built-in wording.

Set a custom message

  1. Edit the coupon and open the Better Coupon Restrictions tab.
  2. Find the section whose message you want to change, such as Cart or Date.
  3. Type your message into Custom Error Message.
  4. Save the coupon.

Messages are set per coupon and per section. There is no global message setting.

One message per section

A section’s message is used for every rule in that section. For example the Date message is shown for the date range, the months, the weekdays and the time of day. If you need different wording for two rules, put them on separate coupons or keep the default message for one of them.

Insert the required amount with {value}

In sections that have a required amount, {value} is replaced with it:

Section{value} becomes
CartThe minimum quantity, subtotal or weight from the rule that failed
Customer Order HistoryThe minimum spend or number of orders
Time Since Last Order, Time RegisteredThe number of hours
Usage Limit Per PeriodThe number of uses allowed
Purchase HistoryThe product names

Example: “Spend {value} or more to use SUMMER10.”

In other sections there is no amount, and {value} would appear in the message as typed, so leave it out. It also stays as typed for rules in those sections that have no amount, such as the “registered customers only” rule in Time Registered.

Formatting

Messages are plain text. HTML tags are shown as text rather than formatted.

What shop managers see

When you are logged in as a shop manager or administrator, a small extra line is added under the message naming the exact rule. Customers only see your message. See See which restriction rejected a coupon.
