The discount applies to products outside the restriction
Updated September 15, 2026
If a coupon restricted to certain products or categories is discounting other items in the cart too, check the coupon’s Discount type on the General tab. Better Coupon Restrictions only limits which items get the discount for Fixed product discount coupons.
Why this happens
When you tick Enable under Improved Product Restrictions or Improved Category Restrictions, the products or categories are moved out of WooCommerce’s own Products and Product categories fields and into the plugin’s table. WooCommerce uses those fields to decide which items a percentage or fixed cart coupon discounts, so they no longer narrow the discount.
- Fixed product discount: the plugin removes the discount from cart lines that do not match a row. Only matching items are discounted.
- Percentage discount and Fixed cart discount: the rows decide whether the coupon can be used at all. Once it is applied, WooCommerce discounts every item that is not excluded.
Product Attribute Restrictions works the same way.
How to fix it
Choose the option that suits the offer:
- Switch the coupon to Fixed product discount if a fixed amount off each qualifying item works for your promotion.
- Use Exclude Products or Exclude Categories in the same section to remove the items that should not be discounted. Exclusions use WooCommerce’s own handling, so they apply to every discount type.
- Use WooCommerce’s own Products or Product categories fields instead of the plugin’s table, if you do not need per product quantities. Untick Enable in the plugin section and add the items on the Usage restriction tab.
Test the result
Add a qualifying product and a non-qualifying product to the cart, apply the coupon and check the discount line by line. Please confirm the behaviour on your own store, as other discount plugins can change how WooCommerce spreads a coupon across items.
