Restrict a coupon by products purchased before (PRO)
Updated September 15, 2026
The Purchase History section (PRO) targets customers by what they have bought before. Use it for reorder discounts, upgrade offers, or to stop existing buyers using an introductory code.
Find it in the Better Coupon Restrictions tab on the coupon edit screen.
Must Have Purchased
Search for one or more products or variations. The coupon is only valid if the customer has previously bought at least one of them.
Message: “This coupon is only available to customers who have previously purchased: Product A, Product B.”
Must Not Have Purchased
Search for one or more products or variations. The coupon is rejected if the customer has previously bought any of them.
Message: “This coupon is not available to customers who have previously purchased: Product A.”
What counts as a purchase
The check uses WooCommerce’s own “customer bought product” lookup, which looks at paid orders (Processing and Completed by default). Customers are matched by their account and by their billing email address.
For a guest who has not entered an email yet, the rule is skipped and checked again once the email is entered at checkout.
Custom message
Custom Error Message in this section replaces both default messages. {value} is replaced with the product names from the rule that failed.
Example: win-back offer
To give 15% off a refill to anyone who bought a starter kit, create a percentage coupon and add the starter kit in Must Have Purchased. To stop those same customers using a first-kit discount, add the starter kit in Must Not Have Purchased on the other coupon.
