Restrict a coupon to payment or shipping methods
Updated September 15, 2026
The Payment & Shipping Method section limits a coupon to, or blocks it from, particular payment gateways and shipping methods. These rules are checked once the customer has chosen a method at checkout.
Find the section in the Better Coupon Restrictions tab on the coupon edit screen.
The fields
- Allowed Payment Methods: the coupon only works with the gateways listed.
- Disallowed Payment Methods: the coupon does not work with the gateways listed.
- Allowed Shipping Methods: the coupon only works with the methods listed.
- Disallowed Shipping Methods: the coupon does not work with the methods listed.
The payment list includes every installed gateway, whether or not it is enabled.
Zone methods and “Any zone” entries
Shipping methods appear in two forms:
- Zone: Method title entries, such as “UK: Flat rate”. These match that one method in that one zone.
- Any zone: Method type entries, such as “Any zone: Flat rate”. These match that method type in every shipping zone, including zones you add later.
When the check happens
Payment method rules are only applied during checkout, and only once the chosen gateway is one the shopper can actually use for that cart. On the cart page, a gateway remembered from a previous order is ignored.
Shipping method rules are applied once a shipping method has been chosen. They are skipped entirely when the cart does not need shipping, such as a cart of virtual products.
If the customer switches to a method the coupon does not allow, WooCommerce removes the coupon and shows the message, for example “This coupon cannot be used with the selected payment method.”
Example: bank transfer discount
To give 3% off only for bank transfer payments, create a 3% percentage coupon and choose Direct bank transfer in Allowed Payment Methods. Customers who apply the code and then choose card payment will see the coupon removed.
