Restrict a coupon by product attribute

Updated September 15, 2026

Product Attribute Restrictions allows or blocks a coupon based on which attributes the products in the cart have. It works with the global attributes created at Products › Attributes.

It is the third section in the Better Coupon Restrictions tab.

Set up attribute restrictions

  1. Make sure the attribute exists at Products › Attributes. Custom attributes typed directly on a single product cannot be selected.
  2. Edit the coupon, open the Better Coupon Restrictions tab and tick Enable under Product Attribute Restrictions.
  3. Choose one or more attributes in Allowed attributes, Exclude attributes, or both.
  4. Save the coupon.

How attributes are matched

The restriction looks at whether a product has the attribute at all, not at a particular value of it. Choosing Size matches every product with a Size attribute, whether it is Small or Large. You cannot target only the “Large” value with this section.

Attributes are read from the parent product, so variations match on their parent’s attributes.

Allowed attributes

The coupon is valid when at least one item in the cart has one of the allowed attributes.

Exclude attributes

The coupon is only rejected when every item in the cart has an excluded attribute. A mixed cart is accepted.

Which items get the discount

For Fixed product discount coupons, items without an allowed attribute, and items with an excluded attribute, get no discount. For percentage and fixed cart coupons the section only decides whether the coupon can be used. See The discount applies to products outside the restriction.
