Install and set up the plugin
Updated September 15, 2026
To get started, install and activate the plugin, then paste an OpenAI API secret key into AI Text-to-Speech › Settings › General Settings › OpenAI API Secret Key and click Save Changes. Until a key is saved, the post editor box and the Generator page show a prompt to add one instead of the generation controls.
Install the plugin
- In WordPress, go to Plugins › Add New and search for “AI Text to Speech”, or upload the plugin ZIP file with Upload Plugin.
- Click Activate. You’ll be taken to the settings page automatically.
- If you bought PRO, upload the PRO ZIP from your purchase email or account and activate it. Enter your licence key when prompted. You don’t need the free version installed alongside it.
On activation the plugin creates the folder /wp-content/uploads/ai-text-to-speech/, where audio files are saved.
Create an OpenAI API key
- Sign up or log in at platform.openai.com.
- Open Billing and add a payment method and credit balance. Requests fail with an insufficient quota error if the balance is empty.
- Go to API keys, create a new secret key and copy it. OpenAI only shows the full key once.
- Optionally set a monthly usage limit in your OpenAI account so costs can’t run higher than you expect.
Add the key and choose a voice model
- Go to AI Text-to-Speech › Settings and stay on the General Settings tab.
- Paste the key into OpenAI API Secret Key.
- Leave Voice Model on GPT-4o mini TTS (New) unless you have a reason to use Basic TTS-1 (Old). Voice styles and custom instructions only work with GPT-4o mini TTS.
- Check the Player Label text. It appears under the player and tells visitors the voice is AI-generated, which OpenAI’s usage policies require.
- Click Save Changes.
Generate your first audio file
Open any post in the editor. In the sidebar, find the AI TTS box, pick a voice and click Generate TTS. When it finishes, a preview player appears in the box and the same audio shows at the top of the post on the front end.
If you’d like to test without touching a post, use the Generator page at AI Text-to-Speech › AI Text-to-Speech instead.
