Getting started with Better Coupon Restrictions

Updated September 15, 2026

Better Coupon Restrictions adds extra conditions to your WooCommerce coupons, so a code only works for the shoppers, carts and times you choose. Everything is set per coupon, in a new Better Coupon Restrictions tab on the normal coupon edit screen at Marketing › Coupons.

The plugin needs WooCommerce to be installed and active. Once it is activated there is nothing to switch on: open any coupon and the new tab is there.

Find the Better Coupon Restrictions tab

  1. Go to Marketing › Coupons and edit a coupon, or click Add coupon.
  2. In the Coupon data box, click the Better Coupon Restrictions tab. It sits just below WooCommerce’s own Usage restriction tab.
  3. Fill in only the fields you need. Blank fields are ignored.
  4. Click Update (or Publish) to save the coupon.

At the top of the tab you will see links to the documentation and support. On the PRO version there is also a link to the Global Settings.

Sections in the tab

The tab is split into sections. The free version includes:

  • Improved Product Restrictions, Improved Category Restrictions and Product Attribute Restrictions
  • Cart (minimum quantity, subtotal and weight)
  • Date (date range, time of day, months and weekdays)
  • Customer Status and Customer User Role
  • Payment & Shipping Method

With PRO you also get Global Restrictions, Customer Address, Customer Email, Customer Order History, Usage Limit Per Period, Purchase History, Time Since Last Order, Time Registered, Referring Domain, IP Address, Meta Data, Cookie and Coupon Link. On the free version these sections are shown greyed out under Pro Version Options.

Set your first restriction

As an example, to make a code work only on Saturdays and Sundays:

  1. Open the coupon and go to the Better Coupon Restrictions tab.
  2. In the Date section, choose Saturday and Sunday in Allowed Weekdays.
  3. Optionally type your own wording into Custom Error Message, such as “This code only works at weekends.”
  4. Save the coupon.

On a weekday the shopper sees your message and the coupon is not applied.

What the shopper sees

When a restriction fails, WooCommerce shows a single error notice and the coupon is not added. If you are logged in as a shop manager or administrator, the notice also includes a small extra line naming the restriction that rejected the coupon. Customers never see that line. See See which restriction rejected a coupon.
